Michelle O'Neill criticises decision to let US use UK bases to strike Iran missile sites

Northern Ireland’s First Minister, Michelle O’Neill, has openly expressed her strong opposition to the UK government’s handling of the escalating conflict in the Middle East. She stated that she “fundamentally disagrees” with the government’s decision to become involved, describing the situation as a “spiralling conflict” that is “deeply disturbing.”

The recent developments began after Iran launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting US forces and their allies throughout the region, including countries such as Israel, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. O’Neill was clear in her condemnation, asserting that the government has engaged in what she considers a reckless war, saying, “This is a war that should never have begun.” Throughout the weekend, she emphasized her focus was on the safety of both Irish and British citizens abroad, including those traveling or on holiday in the affected regions. Her priority remains ensuring that these individuals are safely brought back.

A spokesperson confirmed both officials had been invited. Speaking from Stormont, O’Neill reiterated her continued engagement with the situation over the weekend, stressing that while she remains focused on safeguarding citizens, she remains firmly opposed to the war itself
