A 14-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed while heading to a football game with friends has had his killer sentenced to a minimum of 11 years and 10 months in detention. The victim, Ibrahima Seck, suffered a fatal wound to the heart in Manchester’s New Moston area on June 8. Before succumbing to his injuries in hospital, Ibrahima was able to identify his assailant.
The perpetrator, also aged 14 at the time of the incident, was found guilty of murder after the jury heard evidence that he bragged about committing the crime in a rap video. Two other teenagers, aged 14 and 16, were convicted of manslaughter for their involvement and received sentences of two years and four months, and two years and ten months, respectively. The court heard that Ibrahima had been pursued to a car park near the Fairways Inn by all three boys. During this chase, one of the 14-year-olds stabbed Ibrahima while the others encouraged the attack.
After being wounded, Ibrahima managed to make his way to a nearby house on Nevin Road, where he sought help and named his attacker. Evidence revealed there had been a prior altercation earlier that day involving one of Ibrahima’s friends and a member of the group responsible. Due to their ages, the teenagers involved cannot be named, as the judge upheld restrictions on reporting their identities.
In addition to the perpetrators, two women aged 37 and 39 were convicted of assisting offenders by helping the teenagers flee the scene and providing them with fresh clothing. Both received suspended prison sentences of 12 months. The judge described the attack as unplanned and acknowledged that the killer did not intend serious harm, also noting expressions of remorse. Throughout the trial, prosecution highlighted the violent nature of the assault, with one accused reportedly kneeling over Ibrahima before delivering the fatal stab.
Ibrahima’s parents had previously reported concerns about gang bullying affecting their son and his friends. On the day of the attack, his mother had warned him against going outside due to ongoing harassment but he chose to play outside briefly. Described in court statements as a “cheeky, funny boy” with aspirations to become an actor, Ibrahima was remembered fondly by his family. His father paid tribute after the court hearing, saying, “Every person in the world would like Ibrahima if they met him. He was smiling all the time, always wanting to help… They have not only killed Ibrahima but the whole family and all those people who loved him.”
Det Ch Insp Tony Platten reflected on the tragic consequences of the stabbing, emphasizing the far-reaching impact beyond the immediate moment of violence. He praised the Seck family for their courage and ongoing support throughout the investigation and trial
