Inside the £3.75m castle bought by Celebrity Traitors winner Alan Carr

Comedian Alan Carr, known for his victory on The Celebrity Traitors, has purchased Ayton Castle, a grand estate located in the Scottish Borders. The asking price for the property was over £3.25 million, a sum that places it beyond the reach of most buyers. Despite this, Carr decided to acquire the castle rather than opting for more conventional housing options in London, such as a family home in Belsize Park or a two-bedroom townhouse in Chelsea.

Carr, who is nearing his 50th birthday, humorously reflected on his choice by saying, “Some men when they have a midlife crisis buy a Lamborghini or grow a ponytail, but me – I want my very own castle.” His plans for the property include turning the estate into a livable home, a journey that is expected to be documented in an upcoming television series.

The impressive estate spans approximately 160 acres and has seen extensive renovations by its former owners. Described by estate agents as “truly extraordinary” and one of Scotland’s “most important historic houses,” Ayton Castle boasts numerous large, elegant rooms filled with period features and surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens. The scale and grandeur of the property set it apart from more typical residences.

While the estate agency Knight Frank, which handled the sale, typically does not disclose the identities of buyers, their director and head of residential sales, Edward Douglas-Home, confirmed that the castle was under offer after a successful closing date. Alan Carr’s new acquisition promises to be an exciting chapter both for him personally and for fans tuning in to see how he adapts the historic residence into a comfortable home
