Ian Huntley, the man convicted of murdering two schoolgirls in Soham in 2002, remains hospitalized with serious injuries following an assault by another prisoner at HMP Frankland, a high-security prison in County Durham. The attack reportedly involved a makeshift weapon, and Huntley, now 52, has sustained significant head trauma. Authorities are treating his condition as critical.
The suspected assailant has been identified as Anthony Russell, 43, who is serving a whole-life sentence for a triple murder committed during a spree in October 2020. Russell admitted to killing Julie Williams, her son David, and Nicole McGregor, whose body was discovered near Leamington Spa. Although the police have detained Russell within the prison, he has not been formally arrested as investigations continue.
This is not Huntley’s first violent encounter behind bars. He was previously attacked in 2010 at the same facility, receiving 21 stitches after his throat was slashed, and again in 2005 at HMP Wakefield, where a prisoner poured boiling water over him. HMP Frankland itself is notorious for housing some of the country’s most dangerous criminals and is often referred to as “monster mansion” due to its high levels of violence.
The background to Huntley’s conviction traces back to the summer of 2002 when he murdered ten-year-old schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire. The girls, pictured in their red Manchester United football shirts shortly before their disappearance, had been attending a family barbecue and were on their way to buy sweets when Huntley lured them to his home and killed them. Despite the extensive search involving hundreds of officers and volunteers, the girls’ bodies were found nearly two weeks later. Huntley was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 40 years, while his former girlfriend Maxine Carr was jailed for assisting him with a false alibi, although she has since been released
