Hannah Spencer of the Green Party has emerged victorious in the Gorton and Denton by-election, securing a total of 14,980 votes. She surpassed Matt Goodwin from Reform UK, who received 10,578 votes, as well as Angeliki Stogia representing Labour, who gained 9,364 votes.
This constituency was traditionally regarded as a stronghold for the Labour Party. The by-election was called following the resignation of the former Labour MP Andrew Gwynne in January, who stepped down due to health issues.
Andrew Gwynne had served as a Labour MP since 2005, initially elected in the previously established Denton and Reddish constituency. However, his tenure was marked by controversy last year when he was suspended from the Labour Party after sending offensive messages via WhatsApp.
The outcome of this by-election marks a significant shift, as the seat, historically secure for Labour, has now been claimed by the Green Party candidate, Hannah Spencer, highlighting changes in the local political landscape
