The BBC has issued an apology after a racial slur was heard during its coverage of the Bafta Film Awards, following an incident involving a guest with Tourette’s syndrome. John Davidson, whose experiences inspired the film *I Swear*, involuntarily shouted the N-word while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award. The offensive language was not removed from the broadcast, which aired on a two-hour delay on BBC One, and the clip remained available on BBC iPlayer until the ceremony footage was subsequently taken down.
A BBC spokesperson acknowledged the failure to edit out the outburst before the broadcast and confirmed that the segment has now been removed from the iPlayer version. While the utterance was audible, it was noted that many viewers may have had difficulty discerning the word clearly. Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, criticized the BBC’s oversight, calling it “a horrible mistake” and insisting that a formal explanation was necessary regarding why the slur was not bleeped out during the live transmission. The BBC explained that the offensive remark was caused by involuntary verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome and emphasized that it was not intentional. However, they declined to elaborate on why the moment was not censored initially.
Following the ceremony, Delroy Lindo expressed to *Vanity Fair* that both he and Jordan continued their presentation despite the disruption but lamented that no representatives from Bafta came to speak with them afterward. Bafta released a statement recognizing the harm caused by the incident, extending an apology to those affected, and thanking the actors for their professionalism under difficult circumstances. The organization also acknowledged the challenges faced by Davidson and stated their commitment to learning from the event while upholding inclusion as a core value in their future activities.
