Authorities in Nepal have confirmed that 19 people lost their lives in a bus accident, including a 24-year-old British man. The vehicle, which was transporting tourists, was en route to Kathmandu when it veered off the road and plunged approximately 200 meters down to the bank of the Trishuli River. The incident occurred early on Monday morning in Dhading district, located in central Nepal.
The bus was carrying 44 passengers along with the driver at the time of the crash. Among those on board, 25 individuals sustained injuries. The journey originated from Pokhara, a well-known hub for tourists visiting Nepal. Officials are currently conducting an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. Meanwhile, the UK Foreign Office has stated that it is providing assistance to the family of the deceased British national.
Nepalese police have so far identified nine of the deceased victims. The injured include a Chinese citizen and a New Zealander, according to law enforcement officials. All those wounded were transferred to hospitals in Kathmandu for medical treatment. According to police spokesperson Abinarayan Kafle, 17 people succumbed to their injuries at the crash site, with two more passing away later while receiving care.
Road safety remains a significant concern in Nepal, as accidents frequently occur due to factors like inadequate road maintenance and the challenging terrain characterized by narrow routes in mountainous regions. Earlier this year in 2024, a similar tragedy took place when a bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu fell into the Marsyangdi River within the Tanahun district, resulting in at least 14 fatalities.
