A march led by the far-right group Britain First, alongside counter protests, resulted in considerable disruption across Manchester city centre, leading to the arrest of six individuals. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that these arrests were connected to several offences, including the assault of an emergency worker, public order violations, breach of the peace, and failure to comply with a dispersal notice.
To manage the situation, GMP instituted a dispersal order throughout the city centre, effective until 20:00 GMT. This order empowers officers to remove people from designated areas to help maintain public order. Assistant Chief Constable Rick Jackson explained that the police had to deploy an additional 50 officers, supported by mounted and dog units, to keep the protests safe and respectful for all participants.
Jackson commented on the impact of the day’s events, acknowledging the “significant disruptions across the city centre” while emphasizing that the police’s top priority was ensuring the safety of the public. “We will continue working with local communities, businesses and partner organisations to ensure these protests remain safe and respectful for those involved,” he added.
The demonstrations saw supporters of Britain First gather near Piccadilly station, with counter-demonstrators present elsewhere in the city centre. Visual coverage depicted a strong police presence, including officers in riot gear positioned between the opposing groups. Chief Superintendent Danny O’Neil noted that the dispersal order, which can be applied for up to 48 hours, is designed to prevent anti-social behavior, crime, harassment, and distress.
