UK Athletics pleads guilty to corporate manslaughter

UK Athletics has formally admitted guilt in relation to the corporate manslaughter of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei. Hayayei tragically lost his life at the age of 36 when a heavy metal cage fell on him during a training session at Newham Leisure Centre in London in July 2017.

Initially, UK Athletics had denied the manslaughter charge in March 2025. However, during a hearing at the Old Bailey last Friday, the organization changed its plea to guilty. Alongside this, Keith Davies, who was the head of sport for the 2017 World Para-athletics Championships, also entered a guilty plea to a health and safety violation. Davies had previously rejected charges of gross negligence manslaughter.

In court, Prosecutor Karen Robinson requested that a sentencing hearing be arranged over two days in early June. She confirmed that the prosecution would no longer pursue a trial and that any remaining charges would be addressed once sentencing concludes.

Davies, aged 78, was allowed to remain out on bail under the condition that he cooperate with the Probation Service for the preparation of a pre-sentence report
