Winter Olympics trip 'cost same as seeing Barry Town in Llandudno'

John McAllister, a passionate sports fan from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, managed an extraordinary 24-hour round trip to the Winter Olympics in Milan. Remarkably, the cost of his journey was roughly equivalent to what he might spend attending a local football match, such as seeing Barry Town play Caernarfon in Llandudno. The full-time YouTuber and Cardiff Devils supporter flew out on a Sunday to witness the men’s ice hockey match between Canada and France.

At just 27 years old, McAllister was surprised to find that his entire trip to Italy, including travel, was only about £135 — only slightly more than what he would pay for train fares and the football game in Conwy county, where tickets and refreshments pushed expenses to around £125. “It was cheaper than me going to Llandudno to watch Barry Town,” he said. A key factor in keeping costs down was avoiding the price of accommodation, which would have potentially added £400 to his overall expenditure.

Landing in Milan at 11:00 GMT, McAllister described the atmosphere at the Winter Olympics as “fantastic.” He noted that the crowd was vibrant and heavily supportive of the two teams on the ice, with some 5,000 to 6,000 Canadian fans in attendance. “It was almost a party-like atmosphere, everyone was very excited, it was a massive event,” he recalled. The game itself saw favorites Canada secure a decisive 10-2 victory over France. After the match, McAllister enjoyed exploring the city and indulged in some pizza before heading back to the airport by 11 pm.

To catch his early morning flight at 06:00 the next day, McAllister found a quiet corner in the airport to get some rest, a testament to his commitment to making the trip economical. Reflecting on his experience, he commented on the expense of public transport in the UK, saying, “It says a lot about why people don’t tend to use public transport in the UK. It costs so much money.” This trip was just one in a series of sports-related adventures, with McAllister having previously watched rugby in New Zealand, ice hockey in Canada, and football in Singapore. Although his girlfriend, Beth, doesn’t always accompany him, he humorously acknowledged, “It’s safe to say she thinks I’m slightly mad.
