Bumper ski season but also avalanches in Scotland's snowy hills

Scotland’s mountain snowsports destinations are currently experiencing their most successful winter season in six years. Glenshee ski centre, which opened towards the end of December, reported “fantastic” conditions over the past three weeks. Meanwhile, Glencoe Mountain described this season as the best since the onset of the Covid pandemic in March 2020, and Cairngorm Mountain also labelled the period as “a great year” so far. Despite some disruptions caused by high winds, all of Scotland’s mountain resorts have been able to operate thanks to several days of calm weather and plentiful snow.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) has highlighted an increase in avalanche activity this season, recording approximately 150 avalanches, nearly 100 of which have occurred in the last month alone. This number is over three times higher than the total avalanches reported last season. Due to this heightened risk, SAIS has issued “considerable” hazard warnings for regions such as the Cairngorms, Creag Meagaidh, and Lochaber, areas frequented by hillwalkers, climbers, and backcountry skiers.

At Glencoe Mountain, the site welcomed more than 1,000 skiers and around 600 sledgers on a single day recently. Andy Meldrum, Glencoe’s manager, said, “Best season since Covid. We have been open for skiing now since early January,” adding that almost all runs and lifts on the mountain are currently operational. This week also marks a special anniversary for Glencoe, commemorating 70 years since Scotland’s first ski tow started operation in the Main Basin. Similarly, Glenshee’s managing director, David Farquharson, shared that the centre has seen “fantastic” conditions aligning perfectly with the school February half-term holidays, attracting up to 2,500 visitors on their busiest day. Farquharson noted that unlike previous years, this season the resort has been able to open more than just the beginners’ slope, although staffing challenges are ongoing due to the business’s seasonal employment model.
