Liverpool City Council is set to invest nearly £4 million in significant upgrades to Walton Breck Road, with a formal decision anticipated at the upcoming Cabinet meeting. The contract to carry out this comprehensive package of highway improvements is proposed to be awarded on Tuesday, 24 February, as part of the broader Anfield Regeneration Programme.
This regeneration initiative aims to enhance the local area by improving connectivity, upgrading public spaces, and supporting both residents and businesses. Walton Breck Road has been highlighted as a crucial focus for the next stage of these developments. The selected contractor will be responsible for delivering enhancements that prioritize safety and accessibility for all road users.
The planned works include resurfacing of both the carriageways and footpaths, modernized pedestrian crossings, and better bus stop facilities. Additionally, parking arrangements along the route will be reassessed, taking into account feedback gathered from the local community. The final design has been developed in collaboration with key partners such as Merseytravel, Liverpool Football Club, emergency services, and residents, following a series of consultations conducted last year.
Resident input has played a significant role in shaping aspects like junction configurations, crossing locations, management of traffic on matchdays, and scheduling construction to reduce disruption. Although the contract award is expected to follow the Cabinet’s approval, the name of the successful contractor will remain confidential for procurement reasons. Work is planned to begin in May, with advance warnings provided about any road closures or diversions, and the entire project is expected to take seven months to complete.
