A tragic accident occurred on Tullyah Road, situated between Newtownhamilton and Camlough, shortly after 15:30 GMT on Tuesday. A private hire bus, carrying 40 pupils from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook, was involved in a crash. Thankfully, according to the school’s principal, none of the students sustained serious injuries in the incident.
The bus was traveling from St Paul’s High School heading towards Whitecross at the time of the collision. Emergency services responded promptly, with five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, an ambulance doctor, and a police officer attending the scene to provide medical assistance. Despite the severity of the crash, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is currently treating the case as a “sudden death.”
Quinn Coaches, the company that operates the bus, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of one of their valued colleagues in the crash. They described him as a “respected and experienced member of our team” whose passing will be greatly mourned. The company emphasized their commitment to fully cooperate with authorities as investigations continue.
In response to the incident, the Education Authority confirmed they are offering critical incident management support to St Paul’s High School. A spokesperson highlighted that their critical incident team will be present at the school to provide emotional support to students as needed. Sinn Féin MLA for Newry and Armagh, Aoife Finnegan, extended her sympathies, noting the driver’s positive rapport with students and emphasizing the distress the event has caused to families involved. She praised the strong and caring nature of the school community and assured that staff are dedicated to supporting pupils and each other during this challenging time
