Road closed due to 'significant incident' involving school bus

A school bus crash took place in County Armagh near Belleeks, involving pupils from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook. The head teacher has confirmed that all children involved are safe and have now been collected by their parents. The incident occurred shortly after 15:30 GMT on the Tullyah Road, located between Newtownhamilton and Camlough, prompting an emergency response.

The principal, Dáithí Murray, acknowledged in a letter to parents that the event likely caused considerable distress for the students on board. SDLP MLA Justin McNulty expressed relief that approximately 40 children walked away from the scene unharmed and were safely at home. The Tullyah Road had been temporarily closed due to the crash but has since reopened.

It is reported that the private hire bus was traveling from St Paul’s High School towards Whitecross when the accident happened. Emergency services responded with five ambulances, two advanced paramedics, an ambulance doctor, and a police officer to assist those involved. McNulty remarked, “It could have been much more serious but thankfully when an incident involves a school bus crash you hope the worst doesn’t happen but thankfully the children have walked away unscathed.”

To support students affected, the school has reached out to the Education Authority’s Critical Incident Response Team, who are offering emotional support. Principal Murray encouraged pupils who feel well enough to return to school, where staff will help direct them to available support services. Both the school and the Education Authority extended their thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by the incident. Sinn Féin councillor Declan Murphy, speaking at the scene, described the crash as a “shock to this community” and praised the emergency responders for their prompt reaction. He expressed sympathy for those involved and hoped the children would recover from the experience
