Starting from 17 February, citizens of the UK and Canada will be allowed to enter mainland China without the need for a visa for visits lasting up to 30 days. This visa-free arrangement applies to those traveling for tourism, business, or to visit family and friends. China’s foreign ministry has confirmed that the policy will initially remain in effect until 31 December.
This new development places the travel privileges of British and Canadian passport holders on par with those from about 50 other nations, such as France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Japan. According to data from the Office for National Statistics, an estimated 620,000 British nationals are expected to travel to China in 2024, indicating that a significant number of people may benefit from the updated rules.
During his January visit to China, Sir Keir highlighted the demand from British companies eager to expand their business presence in the Chinese market. The visit also resulted in an agreement between Sir Keir and President Xi to enhance cooperation in sectors including services, healthcare, green technology, and finance. However, no comprehensive free trade agreement was secured during the discussions.
Despite these developments, some opposition figures criticized the visit, expressing concerns over the UK government’s focus on improving relations with Beijing while potentially neglecting issues related to human rights and national security.
