Rupert Lowe, previously a Reform UK Member of Parliament who now serves as an independent, has introduced a new political party. Representing Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, Lowe unveiled Restore Britain on Friday evening, describing it as a “national political party.” Initially, the initiative began as a “political movement” following Lowe’s suspension from Reform UK in March.
Restore Britain is set up to function as an umbrella organization, partnering with locally based political groups. Lowe, who has a background as a businessman, farmer, and former chairman of Southampton FC, is anticipated to run again for his Great Yarmouth seat. His candidacy will be supported by the local party Great Yarmouth First, which will act as a partner under the Restore Britain banner.
When the group was still considered a political movement, prominent Conservative figures such as Susan Hall and Sir Gavin Williamson were part of its advisory board. However, Sir Gavin indicated to the Press Association that he would step down from involvement now that Restore Britain is officially a political party. Similarly, Susan Hall, the Tory leader on the London Assembly, is also believed to be leaving the board.
According to Andrew Sinclair, the BBC’s East of England political editor, Lowe is known as something of a “maverick MP.” Sinclair noted that Lowe’s independent style partly contributed to his departure from Reform UK. He also highlighted Lowe’s belief in a significant gap between mainstream politics and public sentiment, using his Great Yarmouth constituency as evidence. Despite no elections being held since Lowe left Reform UK, private polling from both Labour and Lowe’s own sources suggests he enjoys considerable local support. Lowe sees space for a right-leaning party that values independent thinking, and although he had hoped for success with Great Yarmouth First in this year’s local elections, the cancellations have shifted his focus towards building national support for Restore Britain
