Polish journalist Rafal Zalewski grew suspicious when he visited Anna Podedworna in Derby for an interview, sensing that she was concealing crucial information. His investigative work received praise from prosecutors, who described it as the “tipping point” that prompted Podedworna to contact Derbyshire Police and disclose the location of her partner Izabela Zablocka’s body. Zalewski recalled the interview, saying, “She was very surprised and nervous during that conversation.”
Zalewski, a reporter for Polsat—a leading Polish TV channel—had been contacted by Izabela’s daughter, Kasia, who asked him to look into her mother’s unexplained disappearance. Traveling to Derby, Zalewski confronted Podedworna outside her home on Boyer Street for a social affairs program called Interwencja. Despite being aware of Izabela’s location, Podedworna initially denied any knowledge. However, Zalewski observed her behavior closely, noting that she appeared uneasy and was likely not telling the truth. He commented, “[She was the] person from the very beginning who was pointed out by Izabela’s family as someone who might be linked and have knowledge relating to the mysterious disappearance.”
Following this emotional encounter, Podedworna eventually broke her silence. Prosecutors indicated that the increasing pressure led her to confess after 15 years. On May 15, 2025, she emailed Derbyshire Police, providing information about Izabela’s whereabouts—though the police were initially unsure what to make of the unexpected message. This led to a series of email exchanges over the next several days, culminating in Podedworna revealing on May 24 that Izabela was buried in the backyard of a property on Princes Street, Normanton. Later that same day, she went to Pear Tree police station in Derby and admitted to killing Izabela. Podedworna claimed Izabela’s death was accidental, occurring during a violent altercation wherein she acted purely in self-defense, but the jury rejected this defense during the trial.
Reflecting on the case, Zalewski explained that Podedworna had deceived Izabela’s family repeatedly. “I knew she could be hiding something, that she might know something more than she’s not telling us,” he said. “This was further confirmed by how nervous she appeared to be when I showed up on her doorstep. We know now that right after that conversation with me, she went to the police and revealed where Izabela’s remains were hidden. Now we know how Izabela got treated after her death, it’s simply something monstrous and macabre.” The case, which attracted considerable attention both in Poland and among Polish communities in the UK, sparked significant public interest. Zalewski noted, “When we walk the streets of Derby, where we’ve been now for over a week, people approach us every other moment and ask us about this case – what else we know, when will the prosecution take place. I think it will get even bigger when we hear the scale of the sentencing.”
Detective Inspector Kane Martin acknowledged the critical roles played by Kasia and Zalewski in reaching the resolution of the case, stating: “The roles that Kasia and Mr Zalewski played in this case cannot and should not be underestimated. It is their actions which pushed Anna Podedworna to finally contact the police and tell us where we would find Izabela’s body and where we discovered it.” Podedworna was ultimately convicted of murder by a jury at Derby Crown Court
