Scottish Labour suspends MSP Pam Duncan Glancy

Pam Duncan-Glancy, who has served as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) since 2021, has had the Labour whip withdrawn amid an ongoing investigation into her connections with a convicted sex offender. This development follows her decision to step down from her role as the party’s education spokesperson last December. She also announced her intention to leave Holyrood in May after details surfaced concerning her friendship with Sean Morton, a former Moray councillor.

This action by Scottish Labour came shortly after Matthew Doyle, a new peer in the House of Lords and a former director of communications to Sir Keir Starmer, had the whip removed while the party investigates his association with Morton. A spokesperson for Scottish Labour commented on the situation, stating, “All complaints are assessed thoroughly in line with our rules and procedures,” emphasizing the party’s commitment to due process.

Doyle’s case revealed that he had campaigned for Morton during the 2017 local elections when Morton was running as an independent candidate. At that time, Morton had been charged but had not yet been convicted. In a public statement, Doyle acknowledged the circumstances, noting that Morton had consistently maintained his innocence during that period and only later changed his plea to guilty. Doyle admitted, “To have not ceased support ahead of a judicial conclusion was a clear error of judgement for which I apologise unreservedly.”

Matthew Doyle had previously served as director of communications for the prime minister, a post he held for nine months before resigning in March last year. Despite his resignation, he was appointed to the House of Lords in January, before the controversy surrounding his links to Morton became public knowledge
