This week marks the celebration of National Apprenticeship Week (9–15 February), a time dedicated to recognising the significant impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses, and communities alike.
Among the many success stories within Liverpool City Council is Brian Wallace, currently an Accounting Technician Apprentice. Originally from Northern Ireland, Brian relocated to Liverpool with the intention of pursuing a career in teaching. However, he soon discovered that teaching was not the right fit for him.
Brian shared his thoughts on the apprenticeship programme, saying, “I wanted a career that offered progression and the chance to learn while working, and the apprenticeship programme gave me exactly that.” After finding opportunities listed on the Council’s website, he embarked on the Accounting Technician apprenticeship, gaining experience in two Transactional Services teams. With the encouragement of his colleagues, Brian developed technical skills, built confidence, and successfully completed his Level 3 Apprenticeship. This achievement led to a permanent role as a Finance Assistant, and he is now advancing his qualifications by working towards a Level 4 AAT.
Reflecting on his journey, Brian commented, “The support from my team has been incredible. I’ve gained qualifications, experience, and a clear career path, all while preparing for a big year personally, as I’m getting married in May!” Liverpool City Council’s Apprenticeship First initiative has welcomed 57 new apprentices recently, adding to the current 224 active apprentices working in fields including business administration, accounting, and data analysis
