A tragic road traffic accident in Kilkeel has resulted in the death of an 11-year-old boy. The collision occurred on Corcreaghan Road early Tuesday morning at around 08:00 GMT, involving a vehicle and the child. Emergency services, including the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), were quick to respond to the scene.
Detective Inspector Stewart, from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit, confirmed that officers, alongside partner emergency services, attended the incident. Sadly, despite their efforts, the young boy was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to hospital. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is still ongoing, with police urging anyone who may have witnessed the event or recorded dash-cam footage to come forward and assist with inquiries.
Local representatives have expressed profound sorrow over the loss. Diane Forsythe, the DUP South Down assembly member, described the news as “absolutely heartbroken” for the family and the wider community. She extended her deepest condolences to the boy’s family, friends, and school community, emphasizing the immense grief caused by such a heartbreaking loss. Forsythe described the boy as “one of the loveliest there are,” remembering him as “so pleasant, so full of life,” and noted how the community has been rallying around the bereaved family.
Colin McGrath, the SDLP MLA, also spoke about the tragedy, calling it “heartbreaking” and acknowledging the shock felt by the local community.
