John Miskelly grew concerned when he learned that Jersey Zoo planned to close its colony of Livingstone’s fruit bats in an effort to reduce costs. Having once served as a trustee for the zoo, which was founded by naturalist Gerald Durrell, Miskelly emphasized the importance of the bats as a globally endangered species. He expressed his distress by saying, “[The zoo] could and should be looking after a species like that… so that’s just one of the signs that things have gone terribly, badly wrong.” Miskelly warned of severe financial difficulties ahead, cautioning that without significant action, the zoo might not survive beyond three years
