Liverpool drives forward Marmot City agenda through Fairer, Healthier Partnership

On Monday, 26th January, partners from various sectors across Liverpool convened for a crucial meeting of the Fairer, Healthier Liverpool Partnership. This gathering served as a reminder of the city’s ongoing pledge to combat poverty, tackle health disparities, and enhance the fundamental elements that contribute to the wellbeing of all its residents.

The event was hosted by Liverpool John Moores University, with special thanks to Professor Tim Nichol and his team for their support. Attendees included representatives from health, housing, education, community services, and voluntary organisations. Chaired by Councillor Ruth Bennett, the meeting highlighted Liverpool’s status as a Marmot City—an accolade awarded in 2025 that recognises the city’s dedication to systematically reducing health inequalities through coordinated action.

Councillor Ruth Bennett, Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council, remarked, “Liverpool has always been a city that stands together. As a Marmot City, we are committed to addressing the root causes of health inequalities, not just the symptoms. This partnership is about turning that spirit into real, measurable change so every resident has the building blocks they need to live a healthy, fulfilling life.” A significant portion of the meeting was devoted to addressing poverty, featuring a spotlight session designed to bolster the Council’s draft Anti-Poverty Framework and to accelerate initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty among children and young people throughout the city.

The discussion welcomed participants from Liverpool City Council, the NHS, local universities, and numerous community organisations including Citizens Advice Liverpool, Liverpool Access to Advice Network, End Furniture Poverty, Feeding Liverpool, Merseyside Youth Association, Healthwatch Liverpool, and several others. This wide-ranging attendance showcased the collective determination to foster a fairer and healthier community. Moving forward, the Partnership intends to maintain this momentum by creating additional opportunities for the public and organisations to engage, working together to transform fairness, health, and opportunity from goals into everyday realities for all Liverpool residents
