During a recent Parkrun event held at the royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk, members of a cancer charity were pleasantly surprised by an unexpected visitor. King Charles III attended the 5-kilometre running and walking event as a spectator, showing his support ahead of World Cancer Day on 4 February. While the Sandringham Parkrun occurs each Saturday, one session each month is dedicated to the Move Against Cancer charity’s “5K Your Way” group.
The event organisers expressed their astonishment on social media, stating they had been left “speechless again” by the King’s presence. Runners and walkers participating in the event waved enthusiastically at King Charles, who greeted them warmly during the first lap of the course, which takes participants on two circuits through the Royal Park. The route itself offers a mix of permanent paths and trail sections, presenting a scenic and varied challenge for all involved.
The King’s attendance carried additional significance as he has been undergoing outpatient cancer treatment since early February 2024. Despite his ongoing health issues, he maintained a cheerful demeanor throughout the event, wearing a brown zip-up jacket as he engaged with the participants and spectators. Organisers had even prepared a sign to acknowledge and commemorate the King’s surprise visit, adding to the day’s memorable atmosphere.
Parkrun, the organisation behind these free weekly events, was founded in 2004. It now brings together hundreds of thousands of people across 22 countries and five continents who participate in timed five-kilometre runs every weekend.
