Comedian Alan Carr has disclosed that he accidentally revealed he was the winner of the first Celebrity Traitors series within just 12 hours of filming the finale. The 49-year-old took home the title after persuading fellow finalists Nick Mohammed and David Olusoga that he was a faithful contestant during the tense conclusion of the show. However, his secret slipped during the next day’s filming of Channel 4’s game show Secret Genius.
Carr recounted the moment on BBC Radio 2 with Scott Mills, explaining that a cameraman congratulated him unexpectedly. “The cameraman goes ‘congratulations’, and I go ‘how did you know I won?’ He said ‘I didn’t,’” Carr said. “So I told them within 12 hours that I had won The Traitors.” After realizing his mistake, Carr attempted to cover up the slip by saying, “I went, ‘haha, got you!’ – I had to backtrack, because you can’t tell anything.” Despite the slip, he was proud of his performance, adding, “But I did well, and I didn’t want to spoil it.”
Both the celebrity and regular versions of The Traitors are filmed several months before airing, with strict confidentiality agreements in place for participants and crew. This year’s celebrity edition featured Carr alongside well-known figures such as Sir Stephen Fry, Kate Garraway, Celia Imrie, Cat Burns, and Jonathan Ross, the latter two also serving as traitors. Reflecting on his participation, Carr admitted, “I felt so stupid. When I did The Traitors, I looked at my work diary and my agent had actually put in work after the first week, and I said ‘oh no, I’m doing The Traitors.’ He said, ‘Alan, you’ll be out first week with your motor mouth, you aren’t going to last.’ Then it kept going on and on.” He added, “I thought I would be gone on day two,” but ended up staying under the radar and winning the competition.
Since appearing on the show, Carr has noticed an increase in public recognition. Recounting a recent trip to Mexico, he said, “I’m never spotted over there. I was on the way to the pool and I heard this woman from the balcony, ‘I see you, traitor. Don’t you hide your face from me. Who are you going to murder today?’” He joked about how such comments might make others think he was a genuine criminal, saying, “People who don’t know I was in The Traitors must think I’m a serial killer.” The Traitors, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, takes place in the Scottish Highlands and involves contestants completing challenges to build a cash prize while trying to identify the traitors among them who eliminate other players each night. The successful celebrity spin-off drew over 15 million viewers, including those watching catch-up, when it concluded last November.
Alan Carr is also set to present a new Channel 4 series called Secret Genius alongside Susie Dent. The program aims to highlight the nation’s undiscovered talents and will begin airing on Sunday
