Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson has highlighted the significance of vehicle manufacturer Chery Commercial Vehicles (CCV) choosing Liverpool as the location for its European headquarters. This decision represents a pivotal advancement in the city’s ongoing relationship with China. Liverpool’s deep-rooted Chinese community and its long history in vehicle production form the foundation of this new partnership.
Liverpool boasts the oldest Chinese community in Europe, with a presence dating back nearly two centuries. This community emerged from the city’s historical trading connections that brought goods from the Far East. Meanwhile, the region’s automotive industry has thrived for over 60 years, with manufacturing facilities in Halewood and Ellesmere Port producing millions of vehicles. These plants have supported thousands of jobs, not only within the factories but also in the numerous businesses connected to the automotive supply chain. Many local families have links to employers such as Ford, Vauxhall, Jaguar Land Rover, and Stellantis.
The city’s expertise as an automotive center, paired with a skilled workforce and a well-established supply chain, has been instrumental in attracting Chery to establish its European base in Liverpool. This move reflects the evolution of Liverpool’s automotive sector, which has grown into a global industry with an international presence. The decision also symbolizes a new phase in Liverpool’s longstanding connection with China, a relationship formally recognized when the city was twinned with Shanghai in 1999.
This achievement was made possible through the collaboration of various partners including Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for Business and Trade, the Office for Investment, the China Britain Business Council, and Liverpool China Partnership. While honoring Liverpool’s proud history, this development is firmly focused on the future and is expected to bring considerable long-term economic benefits to the city
