During the recent festive season, more than 330 gift hampers were distributed to care leavers, made possible by donations collected through Liverpool City Council’s yearly Christmas gift appeal. These hampers contained cozy socks, chocolates, a special gift, and a perfume set. In addition to the presents, the organizing team arranged a Christmas party to celebrate with the young people.
Care leavers, typically aged between 18 and 25, are individuals who have transitioned out of the local authority’s care system. They continue to receive support as they adjust to independent living. Many have little or no family support, which is why the annual gift appeal plays a crucial role in ensuring they each receive at least one Christmas gift.
One recipient expressed their happiness by saying, “this is the best! Is this really all for me?” The heartfelt reaction highlights the positive impact of the initiative on these young people’s lives during what can often be a difficult time of year.
Councillor Liz Parsons, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, extended gratitude on behalf of the Care Leavers Next Steps team, commenting: “The kindness and generosity of the people of Liverpool never fails to surprise me and it makes me so proud to be able to represent this wonderful city.” The appeal’s success reflects the strong community spirit in Liverpool and its commitment to supporting vulnerable young people
