Asylum seeker found guilty of raping woman, 18, in Nottinghamshire park

A jury at Birmingham Crown Court has found Sheraz Malik guilty of two counts of raping an 18-year-old woman in Sutton Lawn park, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. The trial revealed that the victim had been drinking in the park when Malik and another unidentified man attacked her. Malik, aged 28, admitted to having sex with her but insisted it was consensual. Ultimately, the jury rejected this claim, delivering unanimous guilty verdicts on two counts of rape and acquitting him on a third count.

It has since emerged that Malik is an asylum seeker originally from Pakistan. Prior to arriving in the UK, he lived in several European countries including Italy, Germany, and France. At the time of the offences, he resided in Bath Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield. Judge Simon Ash KC postponed sentencing to a hearing set for 6 February, ordering a pre-sentence report to assess Malik’s dangerousness. The judge also remanded him in custody.
