Body found believed to be missing Devon antiques dealer

The discovery of a body in the sea is believed to be that of Matthew Upham, an antiques dealer who went missing while swimming on Christmas Day. Devon and Cornwall Police reported that emergency teams responded to a sighting near the shore of Exmouth Beach, Devon, just before 3 pm GMT on Sunday. Though official identification has not been completed, authorities have notified the family of a 64-year-old man from Budleigh Salterton, presumed to be Mr. Upham.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, the body of another man, aged 47 and thought to be the second swimmer who disappeared on Christmas Day, was recovered. This tragic incident has affected the local community deeply, with floral tributes appearing along the beachfront at Budleigh Salterton in memory of those lost.

The initial alert came in shortly after 10:25 am GMT on December 25, when two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, were reported missing. Following a thorough search operation that lasted until approximately 5 pm, the coastguard called off active searching. The operation involved RNLI teams and coastguard helicopters, which conducted both land and sea searches. Several individuals were rescued and safely returned to shore, where they received medical assessments either at the scene or in hospitals as a precautionary measure.

Due to a yellow weather warning concerning strong winds, various Christmas and Boxing Day swimming events across Devon and Cornwall were either postponed or cancelled. The adverse weather likely contributed to the dangerous conditions faced by swimmers on the day of the tragedy
