Traitors star Jack planned to win with Essex stereotype

Jack Butler, a finalist on the BBC One series *The Traitors UK*, revealed that he initially intended to leverage Essex stereotypes to gain an advantage during the competition. Originally from Sawbridgeworth in Hertfordshire but now residing in Harlow, the personal trainer shared that prior to entering the castle he had used tanning beds and ensured he had “nice white teeth” to help cultivate a certain image. Speaking to BBC Essex, Jack explained, “I actually came into the game, and my whole family will attest to this, I was dead set on being a traitor.”

He planned to embody the Essex personal trainer stereotype as part of his strategy. Jack reasoned that by playing up this persona, the show’s host Claudia Winkleman would select him as a traitor, and the other contestants would underestimate him. However, these plans did not come to fruition as expected because Claudia did not pick him for the traitor role. This forced Jack to adjust his approach during the show.

Despite the initial change in tactics, Jack’s gameplay proved successful. By the concluding episode on Friday, he was the last remaining faithful player and remarkably made it through the competition without receiving a single vote against him from other participants. Reflecting on this, Jack admitted, “I didn’t actually end up using my Essex PT stereotype too much to be fair. It wasn’t needed in the end, I enjoyed just being me on the show and not having to put on a facade.”

Although his fitness background was helpful during some of the missions, Jack confessed feeling a bit embarrassed when fellow contestant Stephen Libby outran him in the final challenge. Stephen, who was one of the traitors, teamed up with Rachel Duffy towards the end to eliminate Jack and claim the £95,750 prize. Jack praised Stephen’s convincing portrayal throughout, saying, “He did a great job of convincing me the whole way through. I was terrified of being murdered and he acted just as terrified as me and I got hoodwinked.” He also assured that their friendships remained intact after the show, noting, “Our friendships are all still intact and it’s lucky we’re all still hanging out together and friends.
