At Helen’s Bay beach in County Down, three individuals were hospitalized after encountering difficulties in the water. The incident prompted a swift emergency response as bystanders attempted to assist, with one person even entering the water to help.
The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) was alerted around 13:00 GMT on Saturday. After receiving initial treatment at the scene, two of the patients were transported to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, while the third was taken to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital.
Emergency services mobilized quickly, deploying two ambulance crews, a rapid response paramedic, a Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) crew, a critical care paramedic, and an ambulance officer to manage the situation. Alongside these resources, a Coastguard helicopter, rescue teams from Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard, and the Bangor RNLI inshore lifeboat joined the operation. Police officers were also present to provide support during the rescue efforts.
The coordinated response highlights the significant role of multiple emergency teams in handling water-related emergencies.
