A mountain rescue group has appealed to two hikers they recently saved to honor a financial promise made to a local hotel that provided them shelter late at night. The Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out on December 29 to assist the pair, who became stranded on Scafell Pike in the Lake District amid hazardous weather conditions. The rescue operation lasted seven hours and was described by the team as avoidable.
Following their rescue, the hikers were offered assistance by the manager of a nearby establishment, the Wasdale Head Inn. The hotel provided the men with refreshments and accommodation at a discounted rate of 35%. However, despite this generosity, the bill, totaling £130, has not been paid three weeks later, and the walkers have not made any contact.
Though the hotel generously waived the fee for the rescue team itself, the organization emphasized their responsibility to reimburse the accommodation to maintain ongoing goodwill with local supporters. A spokesperson for the rescue team expressed frustration: “We avoid judging those we rescue but struggle to understand when the rescued take advantage of hospitality provided by our supporters in the valley.” The hikers explained that their money was left behind in a tent near Green Gable, but agreed to pay the bill later—a commitment that remains unfulfilled.
Furthermore, the hikers failed to express gratitude for the hotel’s efforts, sought further discounts, requested breakfast, and inquired about transportation out of the valley. The hotel reportedly has been unable to reach them, as the contact number provided does not work. Additional items lent by volunteers during their descent, such as headtorches, were also not returned. The rescue team stated, “We have tried contacting the two walkers to encourage them to settle their debt with the hotel but also to return the head torches.” They also hope to return a hospital crutch left in their vehicle by one of the hikers, again with no response received
