A shooting occurred in Manchester’s gay village early on Saturday, leaving a man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg. The incident took place on Richmond Street around 5:00 GMT. While the injury is serious, it is not believed to be life-threatening.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) responded to the scene and have arrested six men, aged between 23 and 26, in connection with the attack. The officers recovered a firearm near the location where the victim was found. GMP indicated that they view the shooting as a targeted incident rather than a random act.
The six individuals taken into custody face charges related to affray and firearms offenses. They remain in police custody as inquiries continue. Superintendent Stephen Wiggins of GMP addressed the community, acknowledging the impact of the event on local residents and workers, stating, “This will undoubtedly be a concerning incident to be waking up to, not just for those who live and work in the city centre, but for the whole of Greater Manchester.”
Supt Wiggins also reassured the public that authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to the wider community. He urged anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist the police with their investigation
