During the Christmas period, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) carried out a crackdown on drink and drug driving, resulting in the arrest of nearly 300 individuals. Among those detained was a 14-year-old child, while the oldest person arrested was an 82-year-old. This enforcement operation ran from December 1, 2025, to January 1, 2026, culminating in a total of 288 arrests, slightly fewer than the 300 arrests made during the same timeframe the previous year.
The police detected many serious offenses during the campaign, including the highest recorded blood alcohol or drug level, which was nearly five times above the legal limit. Additionally, officers identified close to 5,700 cases of speeding. On average, the PSNI arrested about nine people each day throughout the enforcement period. Chief Superintendent Sam Donaldson described the number of detections as “shocking,” emphasizing that the offending drivers deliberately chose to break the law, putting themselves, passengers, and other road users at serious risk.
In terms of road safety, Northern Ireland has seen four road deaths so far in the current year, compared to 56 fatalities in 2025. Donaldson stressed the human impact behind these numbers, saying, “These deaths are catastrophic, devastating losses for loved ones left behind, for their friends and communities.” He urged drivers to carefully consider their own safety as well as that of passengers and other road users before getting behind the wheel.
Further statistics from the campaign revealed 35 recorded offences related to not wearing seat belts and 75 motorists caught using mobile phones while driving. Belfast accounted for the highest number of arrests during the crackdown, with 56 individuals taken into custody. Conversely, the Londonderry and Strabane area experienced the largest reduction in arrests, dropping from 40 last year to 23 this time.
