'High risk' of travel disruption after amber rain warning issued

Police Scotland has issued a warning about substantial travel disruptions due to an amber weather alert for heavy rainfall. The Met Office has forecasted that certain regions, including Angus, Perth and Kinross, and Aberdeenshire, could experience rainfall amounts reaching up to 80mm (3 inches) on Thursday, with even higher totals of approximately 120mm (4 inches) expected at elevated locations. This amber alert is effective from midnight and will last until 6 p.m. on the same day.

In addition to the amber warning, a broader yellow weather warning for rain has been declared, covering areas such as the Highlands, Moray, and Aberdeen. This warning remains in effect until midnight on Friday. Authorities are advising the public to exercise caution and prepare for possible travel delays during this period.

Chief Superintendent Scott McCarren, Head of Road Policing, emphasized the risks associated with the amber warning. He stated, “The amber warning for rain means there is a high risk of disruption on the road network and travel conditions may be hazardous. Motorists are therefore advised to take extra caution when driving and avoid non-essential travel until road conditions improve.” He also urged people to plan their journeys carefully and anticipate delays.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop highlighted how both road and rail transport might be impacted by the forecast conditions. She said, “The Met Office is forecasting heavy rain in parts of eastern Scotland over the next few days, which will likely bring disruption to the transport network. If you have to travel, please make sure you plan your journey before you set off.” The Met Office further reiterated that persistent, heavy rainfall could result in surface water and river flooding, particularly given the already saturated ground from previous rain and thawing snow. Rainfall totals exceeding 150mm (6 inches) are possible in some locations due to rain that began on Wednesday evening
