Russell Brand appears in court via videolink charged with further sex offences

Actor and comedian Russell Brand has been granted bail following accusations involving two additional sexual offences, one of which includes a charge of rape. The 50-year-old appeared briefly via video link from the United States during a hearing held at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday afternoon. Previously, Brand has denied allegations concerning two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. The new charges relate to offences alleged to have happened in London in 2009, including one rape and one sexual assault, according to the documents presented in court.

Brand is scheduled to appear next at Southwark Crown Court on 17 February. The trial regarding the initial five charges is expected to commence at the same court later this year. The investigation into these allegations began after reports from the Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches aired in September 2023.

Born in Essex, Russell Brand first gained recognition as a stand-up comedian before becoming widely known as the host of television programs such as Big Brother’s Big Mouth. He also established a presence on radio, with shows on BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music. Later, Brand transitioned into a Hollywood career, appearing in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek
