The shocking confessions of one of Northern Ireland’s most infamous killers are set to be aired publicly for the very first time. Colin Howell, a dentist, was responsible for the 1991 murders of his wife and the husband of his lover. Initially, their deaths were assumed to be the result of a suicide pact triggered by the discovery of the extramarital affair. However, Howell stunned many when he turned himself in at a police station 18 years later and admitted to committing the crimes.

This case deeply unsettled the Northern Irish community and has been the subject of extensive media coverage, including an ITV drama adaptation. Hazel Stewart, Howell’s former lover, was also found guilty for her role in the murders. In police recordings, Howell described Stewart as “a very unfortunate victim of Colin Howell and I regret that,” highlighting the complex dynamic between the two.

For the first time, Howell’s confession will be featured in a two-part BBC documentary titled *Confessions of a Killer*. During his police interviews, Howell spoke candidly about Stewart’s involvement, portraying her as fearful and coerced. He said, “Definitely as a person she was a victim,” explaining, “there was a co-operation but arising from, you’ve told me, I didn’t know she had a fear, but obviously it’s clear she had a fear and didn’t know how to escape from it.” Howell admitted that Stewart had responded in ways she later regretted, but maintained that she was largely an unfortunate casualty of his own actions.

Howell received a minimum sentence of 21 years, while Stewart was given at least 18 years for the murders of Lesley Howell and police officer Trevor Buchanan, whose bodies were found in a gas-filled garage in Castlerock, County Londonderry.
