Withernsea: Body recovered in search for girl missing at sea

Humberside Police have announced that a body has been found in connection with the disappearance of a 15-year-old girl who was swept into the sea along the East Yorkshire coastline. Grace Keeling went into the water at Withernsea on the 2nd of January. Tragically, her mother, Sarah Keeling, aged 45, and a passer-by named Mark Ratcliffe, who was 67, lost their lives while attempting to rescue her.

Although formal identification has yet to be completed, authorities believe the body recovered is that of Grace Keeling. Detective Superintendent Simon Vickers commented on the situation, stating, “This was a deeply upsetting incident, and I cannot begin to understand the heartbreak felt by all the loved ones of those involved.” Police have maintained close communication with Grace’s family and are providing support through specially trained officers. They have requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.

The body was located early on Thursday morning after more than two weeks of intensive searches. However, due to challenging tide times, weather conditions, and the location, it was not possible to retrieve the body immediately. Rescue teams were finally able to recover the remains safely on Saturday morning, with assistance from HM Coastguard and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.

Humberside Police expressed their gratitude to everyone who helped with the search efforts. Det Supt Vickers added, “Our thoughts and sincere sympathies will always remain with the families of Grace and Sarah Keeling, and Mark Ratcliffe following this utter tragedy.” Investigations revealed from CCTV footage and witness testimonies that Grace had been with a friend near the steps by the rocks when she was believed to have fallen into the water after a wave swept her in. Mark Ratcliffe, a local resident of Withernsea, was pulled from the sea unconscious and later died at the scene. Sarah Keeling’s body was recovered later that evening
