Teenage boys charged after youth seen with machete in city centre

Two teenage boys have been charged following reports of individuals carrying bladed weapons in the centre of Edinburgh. The incident took place on Friday afternoon near the intersection of Rose Street and Hanover Street, prompting a response from specialist firearms officers.

Photos from the scene show a young male dressed in black holding what appears to be a large machete, just a short distance away from other pedestrians. Fortunately, the situation did not result in any injuries. One of the suspects, aged 17, was arrested and is scheduled to attend Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday.

In addition to the 17-year-old, a 15-year-old boy has been reported to youth justice authorities. Police Scotland stated that investigations into the matter are still ongoing as they work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event.

Detective Inspector Alan Sharp encouraged witnesses or anyone present in the vicinity at the time who has not yet contacted law enforcement to come forward with information. “I would urge anyone who may have been in the area at the time and has not yet spoken to police to get in touch,” he said
