William Lloyd-Lavery: Alleged assault by former teacher felt like being hunted, court hears

A woman who alleges she was sexually abused by her teacher during the 1970s has recounted her experience, describing how she felt “hunted like prey” by a male teacher at her school, motivated by “his own sexual gratification.” Her testimony was part of the third day of proceedings in the trial of a former educator accused of indecently assaulting six teenage girls at Richmond Lodge School in south Belfast.

William Lloyd-Lavery, a 77-year-old former history teacher from Richmond Avenue, Lisburn, faces multiple charges, including nine counts of indecent assault and two of gross indecency, spanning the period between 1974 and 1979. He has denied all the allegations against him. During the hearing, a fifty-minute Achieving Best Evidence (ABE) video interview with the complainant was presented to the jury to corroborate her claims. ABE interviews are recorded police sessions aimed at obtaining accurate accounts from victims.

In her account, the woman explained how Lloyd-Lavery had asked her to help search for a history book, guiding her through several rooms within the school. She recalled encountering him in a corridor after attending orchestra practice, where he made direct eye contact and insisted on her assisting him. Her testimony detailed moving from the library to a study room and a large stationery room before being taken to a small stationery cupboard, where she was sexually assaulted. She described moments of distress where, despite guarding herself, Lloyd-Lavery looked up her skirt and later forcibly lifted her so he could search, an experience she labeled as “undignified and degrading.” The assault involved inappropriate physical contact while she was held off the ground, and the incident was interrupted when another teacher unexpectedly entered the room, causing Lloyd-Lavery to stop.

Following the assault, the woman revealed she had gone to the toilets, skipped a lesson for the first time, and later confided in her mother. Her parents confronted the school staff the next day, but according to the woman, no action was taken. When questioned during cross-examination about whether the assault occurred, she maintained, “I was hunted like prey through my own school by a male teacher for his own sexual gratification. I was assaulted and he betrayed me.” The defense challenged her claim of having been taught by Lloyd-Lavery, which she affirmed, supported by a school report bearing his signature provided by the prosecution. The trial is ongoing
