Government demands Musk's X deals with 'appalling' Grok AI

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall has demanded immediate action from Elon Musk’s social media platform X regarding its AI chatbot Grok, following reports that it has been used to create sexualized deepfake images of women and girls without their consent. The BBC uncovered multiple instances on X where users prompted Grok to digitally undress individuals or place them in sexually explicit scenarios, all without permission.

Describing the situation as “absolutely appalling,” Kendall emphasized the severity of the issue, stating, “we cannot and will not allow the proliferation of these degrading images.” She also expressed her full support for Ofcom’s decision to investigate, asserting that the regulator should be empowered to take enforcement measures as necessary.

Earlier this week, Ofcom confirmed that it had initiated urgent communications with xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, to examine allegations that Grok generated images depicting people as undressed. X has been contacted for comment, while the platform itself issued a notice on Sunday cautioning users against using Grok to produce illegal content, including material related to child sexual abuse.

In her remarks, Kendall clarified the government’s stance, highlighting that operators have a duty to act responsibly. She said, “This is not about restricting freedom of speech but upholding the law.” Under the Online Safety Act, intimate image abuse and cyberflashing have been prioritized as offenses, a categorization that extends to AI-generated images. Consequently, platforms are required to prevent such harmful content from being published online and must respond quickly to remove it when it appears
