Anthony Joshua: Boxer flies back to UK after fatal crash in Nigeria

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the United Kingdom following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends. The incident occurred on Monday near Lagos when the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was a passenger collided with a stationary truck on a busy expressway.

Among those who lost their lives in the crash were Joshua’s close associates and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Their funerals are scheduled to be held at a London mosque this coming Sunday. Joshua himself was hospitalized after the collision but was discharged by Wednesday, according to reports.

The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, aged 46, has been charged at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court. Police reports relayed to the BBC indicate that the charges include causing death by dangerous driving. Kayode was granted bail set at 5 million naira (approximately £2,578) and is awaiting the fulfillment of bail conditions. The next court hearing has been set for 20 January.

Anthony Joshua, who was born in Watford, has familial ties to Sagamu, a town in Ogun state near the site of the crash. At the time of the accident, he was traveling to visit relatives in Sagamu for New Year celebrations, a family member revealed. Prior to the trip, Joshua had been spending time in Nigeria following his recent victory on 19 December against American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul
