A tragic fire at a ski resort in Switzerland has resulted in at least 40 deaths and left 119 individuals injured. Among the missing is a teenage girl who attended two schools in the UK. Charlotte Niddam, who is believed to be one of the victims, was a former student at both Immanuel College in Hertfordshire and the Jewish Free School (JFS) located in northwest London.
The Jewish Free School expressed deep concern and called for “love and prayers” for Charlotte, noting that she had spent two years there before her family returned to France. They emphasized her strong connections within their community, stating, “She is loved by so many within JFS and is friends with many in our community.” Similarly, Immanuel College, a private Jewish institution in Hertfordshire, released a statement indicating that the family had requested privacy and support during this difficult period and added, “We are all praying for a miracle for Charlotte and the others.”
Reports from the resort’s tourism site reveal that Charlotte had worked as a babysitter in Crans-Montana during school holidays. The fire broke out early on New Year’s Day at Le Constellation, a bar popular among locals and tourists. Initial investigations suggested the cause was related to sparklers on champagne bottles that were “carried too close to the ceiling,” igniting the blaze in the basement area.
Swiss authorities describe the incident as one of the country’s worst tragedies, with President Guy Parmelin offering his condolences. The Valais Attorney General, Beatrice Pilloud, stated the ongoing investigation is focusing on multiple aspects, including the materials used in the bar, fire safety protocols, its capacity, and crowd size at the time of the fire. Officials also noted that identifying all victims might take several days or even weeks.
