A search effort is currently ongoing at Withernsea, located on the East Yorkshire coast, where several individuals are reported to be struggling in the sea, according to HM Coastguard. The situation was initially brought to attention shortly after 3 pm GMT, prompting the deployment of a rescue helicopter along with another aircraft to cover the area.
Supporting the search are the RNLI’s inshore lifeboat stationed at Withernsea and an all-weather lifeboat from Bridlington, with additional assistance provided by Hornsea Inshore Rescue. Emergency services on site include the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, which has also dispatched its air ambulance, alongside personnel from Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
Hornsea Inshore Rescue communicated via social media that their 4×4 vehicle and casualty care team were en route to offer support at Withernsea. Local resident Darrin Stevens described witnessing a mass presence of emergency vehicles, noting, “It’s just blue lights, wall-to-wall from one side to the other,” highlighting the intensity of the response along the seafront.
Weather conditions in the area have been reported as harsh, with Stevens characterizing the environment as “bitter” and “freezing,” mentioning that snow had fallen earlier and that the sea was experiencing high waves. He emphasized the danger, stating, “It’s not a good place to be in the sea,” reflecting the peril faced by those involved in the incident
