Rachel Reid, the author behind the popular novel *Heated Rivalry*, has shared that the widespread acclaim for the television adaptation of her work has unexpectedly led to her receiving expert medical assistance for Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosed in the summer of 2023, Reid’s diagnosis coincided closely with the initial talks about transforming her book series into a TV show.
The drama, *Heated Rivalry*, which delves into a secret romantic relationship between two ice hockey players, has rapidly gained significant attention since its release, making it one of the standout new series in recent weeks. In a detailed conversation with *Variety*, Reid revealed how the publicity surrounding the show brought her condition to the attention of a leading Parkinson’s specialist, who reached out with offers of help following her disclosure in an interview.
Reid expressed that her upcoming consultation with a neurologist “could change things” for her, given that until now, she had not been receiving the ideal treatment. Living in a small community meant she faced prolonged waiting times to see a specialist. She explained, “I’ve never gotten to talk to a Parkinson’s expert. I’ve been on a five-year waiting list here because I live in a very small place.” However, the neurologist was able to modify her medication to improve her sleep, a vital improvement that Reid says has positively impacted her ability to write.
Writing has become an increasing struggle for Reid due to the symptoms of Parkinson’s, including difficulty controlling a mouse and the inability to sit for extended periods. She shared, “I can’t type for very long. It’s hard for me to sit in a chair for very long. I need to figure out new ways to write.” Reid is currently exploring alternative methods such as voice-to-text technology, although she admits it does not yet feel natural for her.
*Heated Rivalry*, which follows the story of rival ice hockey players Shane and Ilya, portrayed by Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, is set against a backdrop of competition and ambition. As the narrative unfolds, their initial rivalry evolves into a secret and enduring romantic relationship. The show, adapted and directed by Jacob Tierney, launched in North America in late November and is scheduled to premiere in the UK on January 10 via Sky and the Now streaming service
