Greenock Morton chairman quits after online abuse to family

John Laird, chairman of Greenock Morton football club, has resigned from his position following a series of online threats and abusive messages directed at him and his family. Having been connected with the club for over 40 years, Laird revealed that what began as football-related criticism had unfortunately evolved into personal attacks. He expressed deep disappointment over his departure, which is effective immediately.

Laird emphasized that his decision to step down was not taken lightly. He stated, “Sustained online abuse, threatening and derogatory behaviour directed towards both myself and my family, and libellous comments made in writing and online, have now crossed an unacceptable line. What began as criticism relating to football matters has escalated into behaviour that is impacting my personal life, family, household, and business interests. This situation is no longer tolerable, and I cannot allow my continued association with the club to negatively and distressfully affect myself and those closest to me. I am deeply disappointed to step down under these circumstances.”

Born in Greenock, Laird has a background running businesses in the energy sector as well as in sports management and events. He assumed the role of chairman at Greenock Morton in 2023. The club issued a statement thanking him for his dedication and contributions, while also condemning all forms of abuse, whether online or in person, towards players, staff, officials, or supporters, describing such behaviour as entirely unacceptable.

Meanwhile, Greenock Morton’s manager, Dougie Imrie, left the club in November to become manager at Raith Rovers. Currently, Morton is positioned sixth in the Championship. The club is being led by a management team under technical head coach Billy Davies, appointed earlier this summer, as they seek a new permanent managerial replacement
