A 20-year-old man was detained under the Mental Health Act following an attack with a crowbar at Newton Community Hospital in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside Police confirmed. The individual, originally from Afghanistan and residing locally, entered the hospital and assaulted six staff members and patients. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and initially charged on suspicion of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, affray, and criminal damage.
The six victims suffered injuries such as head lacerations, bruising, and wounds to their hands and arms. They were treated at hospitals and walk-in centres and are all reported to be in a stable condition. Officers are currently conducting a forensic examination of the weapon used and are reviewing CCTV footage while speaking to witnesses to gather more information about the incident.
