Newport skin cancer survivor urges fake tan use over sunbeds

Emma Giannuzzi, a 36-year-old skin cancer survivor from Rogerstone, Newport, strongly advises against using sunbeds, especially given the associated health risks. Although many people look to achieve a tan ahead of festive events like New Year’s Eve, Emma emphasizes the importance of opting for safer alternatives such as fake tanning products. Reflecting on her own experience, she shared that she regularly used sunbeds in her late teens but was twice diagnosed with melanoma—first at 23 and again during pregnancy. “It is really not worth it that momentary feeling of ‘oh yes my skin looks lovely and tanned’. It doesn’t last. It’s literally a moment,” Emma said.

While Emma cannot definitively confirm that sunbed usage caused her melanoma, she believes they were “likely a factor in me getting melanoma.” Statistics indicate a worrying trend in Wales, where confirmed cases of suspected skin cancer requiring treatment increased from 3,611 in 2021-22 to 5,907 in 2024-25. A survey from Melanoma Focus revealed that more than a quarter of people in Wales use sunbeds at least once annually, and 20% use them monthly.
