A man in his 80s tragically lost his life after being struck by a car and carried on its roof for up to a mile, prompting the arrest of three men in connection with the incident. The collision occurred on the A289 Gads Hill in Gillingham, Kent, involving a grey Mercedes estate. Kent Police confirmed that the elderly pedestrian was hit on Monday, and his body was eventually discovered by a postman on Grange Road. The vehicle involved was later found abandoned on Eastcourt Lane.
Two men aged 29 and 28 were apprehended on the day of the crash, with a third man, also 28, arrested the following day. The suspects come from Chatham, have no fixed address, and from Edgware in north-west London, respectively. Authorities revealed that the two occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot shortly after the collision.
Ralph Belmonte, a long-term resident of Grange Road, recounted how the postman initially mistook the body for a dummy strapped to the top of a vehicle while making deliveries. “It was only on his return to drop the rest of the mail off that he saw [the body] on the road and approached it thinking that it might have been a dummy and it could create a problem, an accident,” Mr Belmonte explained. Upon closer inspection, the grim reality became clear. He remarked on the rare nature of such events in the area, noting, “It’s not an area known for high crime rate, but it can happen anywhere.”
Kent Police detectives investigating the crash have appealed for witnesses and released CCTV images showing two hooded men in dark clothing walking on a pavement, with one appearing to run while holding a number plate. The South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed they provided medical treatment at the scene, but unfortunately, the pedestrian later died. Detective Inspector Zoe Wilczek from the serious collision unit thanked those who have supported the inquiry so far and urged anyone with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward
