Toy car battery starts Christmas Day house fire in Monmouthshire

A devastating fire broke out in a family home on Christmas Day after a toy car’s battery caught fire, leaving the house heavily damaged. Sherianne Wood, 41, along with her two sons, Evan, 13, and Blake, six, were forced to flee their flat in Caerwent, Monmouthshire, when flames erupted in one of the children’s bedrooms around 8:30 pm GMT. The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service identified the likely cause as a lithium battery unit used to charge a remote-control toy car—one of the boys’ Christmas gifts.

Ms. Wood described the traumatic experience and expressed how disrupted their holiday became. She recalled how everything was perfect earlier in the day, but the situation rapidly worsened once the fire started. In a desperate effort to protect her family, she grabbed her children and ran around the block of flats, shouting for others to evacuate. She also bravely went back inside the building twice to rescue her dogs, despite her children begging her not to reenter the dangerous environment. “It was absolutely horrific,” she said.

After the fire service helped the family retrieve essential medication from the damaged flat, Ms. Wood reflected on the aftermath with sadness. She said very little was salvageable from the fire’s destruction and shared how deeply affected her sons were by the ordeal. “My poor son had such bad anxiety, he wanted us to get away from there, it’s like he’s suffering from PTSD. My youngest is completely mentally scared, mentally damaged from it. The children won’t want to go back. You take on your children’s heartbreak,” she explained.

Currently, the family is living in a hotel while fire officials fully assess the damage to their home. The local community has rallied around them, raising over £3,500 through a crowdfunder. Ms. Wood expressed gratitude for the outpouring of kindness from strangers, family, and friends, calling it “completely overwhelming.” She also hopes her experience raises awareness about the hazards of rechargeable battery units used in toys. “I don’t want anyone to go through what we’ve been through, it’s so distressing,” she warned. “People are buying these big batteries, and not being warned about how dangerous they are… Awareness needs to be spread.”
