Thousands gathered in Edinburgh’s Meadows to take part in the city’s iconic Hogmanay celebrations, marked by a vibrant torchlight procession. The glowing parade made its way through the park, progressing towards Edinburgh Castle, igniting excitement for the upcoming New Year festivities. Leading the event was Hearts and Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, accompanied by members of the South Mainland Up Helly Aa’ Jarl squad from Shetland, who helped initiate the tradition.
Organizers reported that around 15,000 participants carried flaming torches during the march, while approximately 10,000 spectators watched the event unfold. The procession featured hundreds dressed in themed costumes, including Viking-style attire, enhancing the dramatic atmosphere as they paraded through the city. Pipers played music to lead the way along George IV Bridge, adding a traditional soundtrack to the torchlit spectacle.
Edinburgh is preparing to welcome an estimated 60,000 visitors from across the globe to join in celebrating the arrival of 2026. The festivities will culminate with a live concert headlined by indie rock band Wet Leg, taking place on 31 December in Princes Street Gardens. Following the concert, the city will host its signature fireworks display. Additionally, the much-anticipated street party on Princes Street is returning as part of the four-day festival.
After last year’s cancellation due to severe weather concerns, this year’s Hogmanay events are expected to proceed without disruption, as forecasters predict dry conditions and low risk of adverse weather.
